Block Email Senders in the Outlook Desktop Client

Overview

If you are receiving unwanted mail (SPAM or otherwise) from a particular address, you can automatically send those messages to your Outlook Junk Email folder where they will automatically be removed by the system after 60 days. Microsoft considers the Junk Email folder to be a first order mitigation solution for SPAM and malicious mail. For this reason, the Junk Email folder should generally be ignored. You should only check to the Junk Email folder if you are expecting a message that is not appearing in your Inbox.

Follow these steps to block specific sending addresses from delivering future messages to your Outlook email Inbox.

Environment

These instructions apply specifically to the Outlook desktop mail client.

Before You Begin

Start your Outlook desktop client and find a message in your Inbox from a sender from whom you do not want to receive mail.

Steps

  1. Find the message from an unwanted sender in your inbox and select it.

  1. Right click on the message to bring up the message's context menu

  1. Select Junk from the message's context menu.
  2. Select Block Sender from the Junk sub-menu's options.

  1. Click the OK button on the dialog box explaining that the unwanted email address has been added to your Blocked Senders List.

Additional Info

As noted in the confirmation dialog box, the message that you used to block the sender will automatically be moved to your Junk Email folder. All future messages from that exact email address will be automatically delivered to your Junk Email folder. After 60 days in your Junk Email folder, the message will be automatically deleted without any further intervention on your part.
