Introduction:
From time to time, electronic equipment might fail to properly power up when the power button has been turned to the ON position and/or pressed. This article will provide a brief overview of the conditions that can cause the power start failure as well as a list of actions, that can be used in order to attempt to power up the device. Failure to power on can be caused by a wide variety of situations, anything from a unexpected power outage to a combination of a failed sleep state / update cycle causing a device such as a computer to fail to power on.
Problem Description:
The computer, laptop, tablet, monitor, printer, etc. will not power up when the power button is pressed.
Solution:
- Check that the power cord from the back of the device is completely plugged in. On some devices, a loose power cord will prevent the device from powering up. Also, if your device is plugged into a power strip insure that the power strip is in the "ON" position.
- Check that the power cord is plugged into a working outlet and/or power strip. Wall outlets and power strips can become faulty and prevent your device from receiving full power required to power your device.
- Pull the power cord from the back of the device, then hold down the power button for 10 - 20 seconds. Plug the power cord back in and check if that resolves the issue.
[Some devices will fall into a "brown-out" state and must have any residual power removed from the device before it can power up correctly.]
Additional Tips and Troubleshooting:
In some cases, simply trying a different wall/cube outlet will resolve the issue. Also, on devices which have a AC/DC power transformer (such as most scanners and laptops) you might need to unplug and re-plug the adapter as they too can retain residual power thus preventing proper powering up of your device. Should the above tips not aid in power on your device, create a ticket with IT for assistance as it is possible that a hardware issue exists which is preventing your device from powering on correctly.

Conclusion:
Most power on issues can be resolved by simply forcing a power cycle on the device. In few cases, the actual power supply and/or source are defective and will need to be serviced or replaced. On modern computers and laptops, holding down the power button for 15 seconds or longer should drain out any residual power that might prevent your device from powering on.
