Introduction:
Network file shares are used across campus to share documents and provide a safe location for department assets. Most of the time network shares will map automatically on login with Windows Group Policy. Sometimes this fails, or you're not using a Windows device, that's where this article can help.
Problem Description:
An end user needs to connect to a department or campus file share.
Solution:
- Click into the search box (just to the right of the start square), type File Explorer, press Enter
- Click on "This PC" (on the left)
- At the top, click on Computer then Map Network Drive
- Choose a drive letter
- For the folder, enter the server path for the share (you can get this from a coworker, AA, or the IT Help Desk)
- Check the box next to "Reconnect at sign-in"
- Click Finish
Additional Tips and Troubleshooting:
If you are off campus or using wireless, make sure to connect to the VPN before attempting to connect to network shares.
Make sure to use the full server name to reduce the chance of issues. For example, use "generaldeptdata.usi.edu" instead of "generaldeptdata".
File path are not case-sensitive.
